How to find your personal style

Written by Paula Rusu

When we talk about fashion, there are countless rules, clothing styles, dress codes, and trends. We need to choose only the ones we resonate with in order to create an impeccable image and a wardrobe that matches our lifestyle. This way we can shape our style of dressing.

Personal style means knowing what we like, what we don't like, and what we want to express. When we shape ourselves, we do so from the inside as well as from the outside, and creating our personal style is the first thing to make our outer look unique and original.

Our external image is a reflection of our inner way of life, but at the same time when we work on the external aspect, we will instantly feel much better. So, every outfit built according to your personal style will also make you feel more confident, more beautiful, more you.

How should I find my personal style?

Your personal style, as the name says, is yours alone. It is your method of expression and the essence of your personality. Choose what you like, put it together with what you want to show the world, and then arrange them according to the styling rules that suit you.

In the beginning, take into account some basic rules:

  • You dress for yourself, not for others, so you have to feel comfortable. You wear the clothes, they don’t wear you.
  • Trends come and go. Wear what benefits you, not what is fashionable. This does not mean that you can not take some elements from the items in trend this season, but only adapt them to your personal style. Wouldn’t you like to see three more women dressed just like you?
  • When you have no inspiration, always focus on something classic.
  • Try to make your own personal style. Find your advantageous parts and built your outfit around them. For example: if you have special eye color, include this color in any outfit or if you have a thin waist, be sure to highlight it with each outfit. In fact, you can also turn your “flaws” into your personal mark.

Put together all elements

The personal style involves first knowing yourself, observing what benefits you, then thinking about what kind of clothes you need depending on the environment in which you work, live, and spend your free time. After that, you think about some of the basic styles that would suit what you need, add your favorite items (especially bracelets, scarves, vests, sunglasses, denim shirts, anything else you like and what defines you), and start experimenting. This will be your style, which you will wear most of the time, of course as long as it suits the dress code of the event, workplace, or location. If you re-focus your professional career, change the environment in which you spend your free time, move to an area with a different climate or simply get bored, you can always change your personal style.

For instance, you work in the office, often go out to eat in the city, shop at the mall and attend a manicure class. Otherwise, you do not have any activity that requires a specific outfit. You really like jackets, denim, and bracelets, but you can’t stand shirts. Then you can choose to wear a jacket at work every day, on easy days, worn even with a pair of simple jeans or even better with a medium length denim skirt, instead of a shirt you can use a simple blouse with a waistcoat or a tie, and you should not give up bracelets as long as they are delicate. In your free time you can wear a casual jacket, maybe even a sports one, matched with sneakers, ballerinas, a dress or shorts. As for the bracelets, now you can wear anything, and denim fits in almost any situation.

How do I completely change my personal clothing style?

First of all, ask yourself why you want to change your clothing style? Is there something new in trend? Your husband told you that you don’t look good enough? Do you want to look like someone else Did you see your co-worker wearing a new type of clothes, or do you just feel it? If it is the last option, you can go further.

When we move from one stage of life to another one, what we feel and think is also reflected in our physical image, so we may want to change our external image as well.

  • What do you want from your feature image. How do you want to look? What do you want to express and how do you want to be perceived in society?
  • How big will the change be? How far are you from what you want to achieve and what do you already have from what you want?
  • Document yourself and see how much the new image resonates with you and your current lifestyle.

Each of us falls into a certain physical typology and is closer or farther from a certain image. For a blonde woman with blue eyes and baby features, it will be easier to choose a romantic, feminine clothing style. For a woman with dark hair and eyes and a prominent jaw, it would be easier to create a slightly harsher image. For example, the office type.

  • If you want a big change, do it in small steps. This way you will be able to get used to it more easily. In other words, if you wear sportswear now, but your new personal style will be predominantly office, you may experience a major change.

Change your clothing style in stages. Add one extra item at a time to slowly get used to your new image. If you make a sudden change, you may not feel comfortable at first and behave strangely, which you certainly would not want.

  • Work on yourself from the outside as well as from the inside. Think and act already like your new version.

Although it initially scares us, change is always a good thing, we just need to know how to manage it in our favor. And .... Don’t forget. It is called personal style just because it's your personal business card. Besides a stylish wardrobe, personal style is the way you talk, walk, act, think, your manners, your body language, and your energy.

You put your personal imprint on it.
